I have always had interest in operations management as it involves the designing, operation and the improvement of the system, that is responsible for creating and delivering the firms primary products. It provides a systematic way of analyzing the organizational processes.Proper operations management is very important for the Company to gain competitive Advantage over other firms.
Now, Six Sigma, basically involves the philosophy and methods that eliminate the defects in the firm’s products. According to Six Sigma Methodology, variation is the enemy of quality.
Six Sigma Methodology involves the DMAIC methodology that is described as follows:
1. D-Define
The company needs to first identify the consumers. The course of action that the company needs to take is determined by many factors such as the organizational business goals and objectives, customer requirements and feedback. The identification of Critical-to- quality characteristics is of vital importance.
2. M-Measure
The company needs to measure and check the performance of the processes and identify the those key activities that have substantial impact on the of Critical-to- quality characteristics. It also involves identification of current defects.
3. A-Analyze
The managers now need to find out the reason for the defects and also the key factors that cause these defects.
4. I-Improve
The company now seeks to improve its processes for eliminating the defects keeping in mind the of Critical-to- quality characteristics. This also involves establishment of acceptable ranges of variation and modification of process so that it remains in the acceptable limit.
