The fashion industry of India will become almost double of its current size of Rs 290 crore by the year 2012. According to a report by ASSOCHAM, the fashion industry is expected to become worth Rs 750 crore by 2012.Indian fashion industry will give employment to around 50000 people. The consumers are getting more and more interested in designer clothes and this means that this is a good time for someone wanting to make a career in this business.
I have prepared a list of the best fashion designing Institutes in India. The list is not in any particular order.
Here is the list:
NIFT or National Institute of Fashion Technology has centers in New Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Gandhinagar , Hyderabad , Kannur , Bhopal ,Mumbai and Rae Bareli.
The institute has Bachelor, Master , and PG Diploma programmes.

NID or National Institute of design is located in Ahmedabad.The Institute offers a 4 year Under Graduate program in Textile and Apparel Design and also a 2 ½ year program Post Graduate Program in Textile Design, Apparel Design & Merchandising and Lifestyle Accessory Design .

Pearl Academy of Fashion offers Post Graduate, Under Graduate and Certificate programmes. Pearl Academy of Fashion has branches in Delhi, Jaipur, Ludhania, and Chennai.

JD Institute of Fashion Technology offers B.Sc and Diploma Courses in Fashion Designing. The 3 year B.Sc Course in Fashion Design & Apparel Design is from Kuvepmu University of Karnataka.

BIFT or Bangalore Institute of Fashion Technology offers a 3 year B.Sc Course in Fashion And Apparel Design , affiliated to Bangalore University. The institute also has a 12 month course in Fashion Design.

NIFD or National Institute of fashion Design is located in Chandigarh.
NIFD has around 180 centers all across India. NIFD offers 1 year , 2 year 3 year programmes. The courses include B.Sc. in Fashion Design, 1 year Diploma in Fashion Design, 2 years Advance Diploma in fashion Design. NIFD has Collaboration with IMB of Milan, Italy, and Annamalai University.

i am very curious on the job market for fashion designers… actually anyone who is not an engineer… most of us would, by default become an engineer or doc..

It depends on the skill and talent of the individual,what he or dhe wants to pursue.
There future of fashion designing industry in India seems to be good as consumers are getting more and more interested in designer wear.This will definitely create a good number of job opportunities for people in this sector.

i am graduate in the field of commerce!!i realised though late that my interest is in the field of fashion designing..
what exactly would you suggest for me.
a bachelors degree would ask for a lot of time , is there any short term course that i could possibly do, also considering the fact that i want to pursue my career in this field.it would be a lot of help if you could assist me with the essential details.thank you.

Hi sheela, Since you are looking for short term courses I would suggest IIFT, which has short term courses of 3 and 6 months.
You can also consider other colleges for the 1 year diploma course,as 1 year is also a short time period.

Dinkar,Its never to late to make a career change if you are sure of the fact that you have the apptitude for being a professional in the field of fashion design.
If you have a passion for fashion design,then go for it.
In my opinion,you will be earning more if you pursue something you actually want to do.
You can visit the sites of the top fashion designing Institutes in India by going through the above list.
You can take a decision keeping in mind the duration of the course and location of the college.

Yes,I think basic knowledge of fashion designing will help a lot it you want to start your own business.

Hi Ankit,
I think an MBA Degree and a qualification in fashion design will be a good combination.
The management skills you are learning in MBA will also help you in your career as a fashion designer.
I do not think so that there is any age limit in joining a fashion designing course.

Hello sir, i m studying in 12th and want to become a fashion designer.I want to go to Delhi but i m not sure whether pearl is a gud option.I know NIFT is the best but by chance i m not selected in the entrance can i opt for Pearl.will i be able to get jobs with a degree frm Pearl.Plz help me i m totally confused.
