The fashion industry of India will become almost double of its current size of Rs 290 crore by the year 2012. According to a report by ASSOCHAM, the fashion industry is expected to become worth Rs 750 crore by 2012.Indian fashion industry will give employment to around 50000 people. The consumers are getting more and more interested in designer clothes and this means that this is a good time for someone wanting to make a career in this business.

I have prepared a list of the best fashion designing Institutes in India. The list is not in any particular order.

NIFT

NIFT or National Institute of Fashion Technology has centers in New Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Gandhinagar , Hyderabad , Kannur , Bhopal ,Mumbai and Rae Bareli.
The institute has Bachelor, Master , and PG Diploma programmes.

NID or National Institute of design is located in Ahmedabad.The Institute offers a 4 year Under Graduate program in Textile and Apparel Design and also a 2 ½ year program Post Graduate Program in Textile Design, Apparel Design & Merchandising and Lifestyle Accessory Design .

    Hi sheela, Since you are looking for short term courses I would suggest IIFT, which has short term courses of 3 and 6 months.

    You can also consider other colleges for the 1 year diploma course,as 1 year is also a short time period.

    If you have a passion for fashion design,then go for it.

    In my opinion,you will be earning more if you pursue something you actually want to do.

    I think an MBA Degree and a qualification in fashion design will be a good combination.

    The management skills you are learning in MBA will also help you in your career as a fashion designer.

    I do not think so that there is any age limit in joining a fashion designing course.

    hello sir….i am a B.com graduate…..and want to make my career in fashion designing as a designer….for that i’ve to do a 4 year degree programme(Bachelor in design)from nift…and as i am already a graduate plz temme it can happen or not?? and i’ve read in the nift prospectus that for a 4 year degree (Bachelor)programme the age limit is 23yrs…..so will it be a problem?? and plzz temme how can i prepare for the entrance of all the institutes??

    Since you are a graduate you can pursue a post graduate program in fashion designing.NIFT has masters programs for graduates.

    It is good to apply in 2 or 3 places.

    Hello Prachi, Since you have done graduation in commerce, you already have some business knowledge.

    I guess now it will be better for you to do a course in ‘fashion design’ so that you learn how the fashion industry functions.

    A course in fashion designing combined with the knowledge of commerce will definitely help you in setting up your business.

    I think arts is a good option if one wants to pursue fashion designing.

    But then a lot of people take commerce or science and still become fashion designers. It depends on the individual.

    Take the example of JJ Valaya, he studied chartered accountancy before becoming a designer.
